Agentic Commerce Is Not The Next Voice Shopping, But It Is Still Unproven via @sejournal, @slobodanmanic
Agentic commerce differs fundamentally from voice shopping (which never hit its forecasted $40B market; Facebook's M assistant died in 2018): it shifts decisions to agents via "Human Not Present" transactions, requiring no merchant opt-in (Shopify's UCP default, Mastercard's DTVC path, Visa filling guest checkouts), introduces agent-specific payments (Stripe Shared Payment Tokens, Google AP2 mandates, x402's HTTP 402), and involves standards bodies (W3C/GS1 Zurich workshop, FIDO, Linux Foundation). Merchants are pushing back on the record via the Merchant Advisory Group's liability-waterfall proposal, while Google's agentic checkout is live on Search/AI Mode with Wayfair, Chewy, and Quince, buying on merchants' sites via Google Pay after explicit user permission.
