UN turns to Google to make its global data ready for AI agents
The UN launched the UN System Data Commons, built on Google's open-source Data Commons platform, to replace its UNData portal with natural-language search and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support for AI agents; 26 UN entities have committed, with nearly 20 datasets at launch and a target of 80% of statistical datasets by 2027. The move follows a UNICEF benchmark of six LLMs (GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4.5, Gemini 2.5 Flash, etc.) averaging just 21.2% accuracy on 133,000 global-development questions, while ChatGPT referrals to UNICEF's data site rose 67% year-over-year. Google.org provided $2 million in funding, with the system hosted on a UN-governed instance and each statistic traceable to its original UN source.
